Precision on the golf course, Panic in the car park: Three Leadership lessons from lived experience

I was lucky enough to spend time at The Open golf in Portrush - a world-class event in every sense. I left reflecting on three lessons - preparation is key; flawless execution; follow your intuition (backed up with data)....

From the moment we arrived, it was clear how much thought had gone into every detail: from immaculate grounds and signage to the thousands of friendly, well-briefed volunteers. Clean, seamless, and spectator-friendly at every touchpoint. It didn't just happen, it was the result of meticulous preparation and high standards. In business, it's no different. The more effort we put in behind the scenes, the more effortlessly the execution appears. Preparation might not be glamorous, but it's what creates standout experiences.

Watching the players up close was inspiring. On the fairways, they looked relaxed, even chatting with each other mid-round. But earlier on the range, it was all laser focus, coaching, and repetition. That's leadership in action. You don't rise to the occasion - you fall to the level of your preparation. Leaders who invest time upfront show up composed, confident, and clear when it matters most.

On the Sunday morning, I noticed a flat tyre on my car (thankfully it was in a car park). We got it fixed the next morning. Something still didn't feel right. Just a gut instinct. So I drove to a nearby garage..… only to discover another tyre was moments from blowing. It hit me how close I came to a serious accident, especially on a rainy motorway. Sometimes your gut knows before you do. Don't ignore that inner voice - it might just save you. But back it up with action and facts. Instinct is powerful, but verification is key, particularly in business.

Grateful for the experience at the golf, the lessons learned - and that second trip to the garage!
